Abstract: Every year, tens of thousands of guns make their way into the hands of criminals through illegal trafficking channels. These firearms contribute to the more than 12,000 gun murders in the United States each year. This report seeks to explain where crime guns originate, where they are recovered in crimes, and whether state gun laws help curb the flow of these illegal weapons. Taken together, this report seeks to present a comprehensive analysis of gun trafficking patterns throughout the United States. It finds that in 2009 just ten states supplied nearly half of the guns crossing state lines before being recovered in crimes -- Alabama, Alaska, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Nevada, South Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia. The report finds a strong association between a state's gun laws and a state's propensity to export crime guns, and concludes that certain gun laws are an important component in reducing criminal access to\n firearms.
