Abstract: This brief explores the history, current state, and possible future of affirmative action in the United States. Specifically, the report examines Supreme Court cases and rulings relating to affirmative action, as well as the court's current theory of affirmative action. The brief also suggests the development of 21st-century alternatives to affirmative action, such as substituting economic integration for race-based policies and other efforts aimed at ending the continuing and disproportionate poverty among African-American and other minority communities.
